Rush hour driving practice in New York

New York rush hour is dense, close and fast to change: double-parked trucks, buses stopping every block, cyclists in marked lanes and pedestrians who step out as the light changes. The PassRank app has two busy-traffic drives in Queens, starting at the Ridgewood and Jamaica road test sites, in right-hand traffic and mph, so you can practise before driving in the city.

What rush hour driving is like in New York

Queens streets are narrower than they look on a map: parked cars on both sides, delivery stops, buses and constant pedestrian crossings. The skill is slowing early, leaving space and watching for people entering the street.

In the app the traffic is dense on purpose, so you practise stopping behind queues, waiting for gaps and not blocking an intersection.

Rules that matter in New York

  • No right turn on red in New York City

Across New York State a driver may turn right on red after stopping unless a sign forbids it, but New York City is the exception: you may not turn right on red unless a sign says you can.

  • Do not block the box

Do not enter an intersection unless you can clear it. Stopping in the intersection when the light changes is a violation as well as a hazard.

  • Pedestrians

Yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk, including when you turn. Many pedestrians cross against the signal or between parked cars, so expect it.

  • Bus and bike lanes

Red-painted lanes are bus lanes with restrictions on when others may enter. Many bike lanes run beside the parked cars, so check for cyclists before you turn right.

  • City speed limit

The default speed limit on New York City streets is 25 mph unless a sign says otherwise.

How to practise it in the app

  1. Open the app and go to the Drive tab, then choose Rush hour.
  2. Pick New York: Ridgewood or Jamaica.
  3. Drive in dense traffic: queue at the lights, wait for gaps, keep crossings and junctions clear.
  4. Get marked on signals, junctions, speed and lane position, plus stopping on a crossing or in a junction in a queue. Replay and change one thing.

Tips for the drive

  • Treat every parked or double-parked truck as a reason to slow down: someone may step out or pull out beside it.
  • At every intersection look left, right, left again, then check the crosswalk before you go.
  • Replay the Jamaica drive for longer queues, and Ridgewood for tighter streets.

Questions

Does it include parallel parking?
The rush hour drives are driving in traffic. For parallel parking, which every New York road test includes, use the parking drills in the app.
Can I use it for the New York road test?
It is practice for the traffic habits the road test looks for. It does not replicate the test route.
Is the rush hour practice free?
The app is free to download. Full access, including rush hour drives, is an in-app purchase on the App Store and Google Play, with a 3-day free trial in the stores. There is no free trial on the website.
