Rush hour driving practice in Istanbul

Istanbul rush hour is steep, narrow, crowded and fast to change: taxis stopping without warning, minibuses picking up anywhere and pedestrians crossing where they can. The PassRank app has a busy-traffic free drive between Taksim and Beşiktaş, in right-hand traffic and km/h, so you can practise holding your lane and reading the traffic around you.

What rush hour driving is like in Istanbul

The streets run downhill from Taksim towards the Bosphorus, with tight turns, parked cars and little room. The skill is anticipating: who will stop, who will pull out, who will cross.

In the app the traffic is dense, so you practise staying in lane, keeping a safe gap and not blocking a junction when the queue stops.

Rules that matter in Istanbul

  • Red lights

Do not assume a right turn on red is allowed. Wait for green unless a signal or sign clearly allows the turn.

  • Pedestrian crossings

Give way to pedestrians on a crossing. People also cross outside crossings, so slow down wherever there are pedestrians.

  • Speed limits

Limits are in km/h. The default in built-up areas is 50 km/h unless a sign says otherwise.

  • Horns and space

Horns are used often. Do not let them rush you: hold your lane and leave a safe gap.

How to practise it in the app

  1. Open the app and go to the Drive tab, then choose Rush hour.
  2. Pick Istanbul: Taksim – Beşiktaş.
  3. Drive in dense traffic: queue at the lights, wait for gaps, keep crossings and junctions clear.
  4. Get marked on signals, junctions, speed and lane position, plus stopping on a crossing or in a junction in a queue. Replay and change one thing.

Tips for the drive

  • Use the free drive to practise holding a steady gap on slopes, so you can move off without rolling back.
  • Expect vehicles to stop suddenly. Look beyond the car in front.
  • Replay with a quiet commentary: say aloud who might move next.

Yes. The roads, junctions and speed limits come from OpenStreetMap; the traffic is simulated.
Is the rush hour practice free?
The app is free to download. Full access, including rush hour drives, is an in-app purchase on the App Store and Google Play, with a 3-day free trial in the stores. There is no free trial on the website.
