How the simulator plays Istanbul

Each drive is built from OpenStreetMap: the roads within a few hundred metres of the route, the buildings, lanes, traffic lights, crossings and the speed limit on every street. The simulator switches to right-hand traffic and km/h by itself.

Free drives that start in Istanbul run in city traffic: nearly twice as many cars around you as on a UK test route, shorter gaps in every queue, drivers who sound the horn a second or two after you hesitate, and yellow taxis among them.

Signal for every turn, keep to the limit and take the right lane at each junction, and the drive is marked like a driving test at the end. Press Watch it first to see the route driven for you.

Before you drive in Istanbul

  • Traffic drives on the right and limits are in km/h: 50 km/h in town unless a sign says otherwise.
  • The Bosphorus bridges are toll roads paid electronically with an HGS tag; check that a rental car has one.
  • Expect buses and minibuses to pull in and out of stops without much warning, and give way to trams in the old city.
  • Plan around the morning and evening rush hours, when the bridges and the main avenues slow to a crawl.
  • The emergency number is 112.

Questions

Can I practise driving in Istanbul before I go?
Yes. Pick one of the Istanbul drives on this page, or any start and destination in the city up to 15 km apart, and the simulator builds that drive from the real map: the same junctions, lanes, traffic lights and speed limits.
Does the simulator drive on the right in Istanbul?
Yes. A drive in Türkiye switches the simulator to right-hand traffic and km/h by itself, with Turkish speed limits.
How close is the traffic to the real thing?
Free drives that start in Istanbul use Istanbul city traffic: more cars, tighter queues, quick horns and yellow taxis. The cars follow the rules of the road, so it is busy rather than reckless, and it is no replacement for lessons with an instructor.
Is it free?
Planning a drive and the 3D flyover are free for everyone. Driving it in the simulator is part of the PassRank subscription, with every route, manoeuvre and roundabout.
