What you need to know
Park only where it is legal and where you do not block or endanger others. Signs and curb markings tell you the rules, and you must read the whole sign for times, days and limits. Never park in front of a driveway, on a crosswalk, on a sidewalk, or in a way that blocks a lane, a bike lane or a fire lane.
Keep clear distances from key places. Stay at least 5 metres from a fire hydrant, and at least 6 metres from a crosswalk at an intersection, a stop sign or a traffic signal. At a railway crossing, stay at least 15 metres away. These gaps keep sightlines open and leave room for emergency vehicles.
When you park on a hill, turn your wheels so that the car will roll away from traffic if the brakes fail. Facing downhill with a curb, turn the wheels toward the curb. Facing uphill with a curb, turn them away from the curb. With no curb, turn the wheels toward the edge of the road. Always set the parking brake and check for cyclists and traffic before opening your door.
