What you need to know
People walking and cycling have little protection, so drivers must give them extra time and space. Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, marked or unmarked, and do not pass a vehicle that has stopped at a crosswalk. Never pass a stopped vehicle near a crosswalk because the driver may be yielding to someone you cannot see.
Cyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers. They may use the road and must follow traffic signals. Leave at least one metre when passing, check for cyclists before opening a door or turning, and watch for them in your blind spot. Cyclists signal using their left arm: straight out to turn left, bent up for a right turn and bent down to stop. They must wear a helmet.
School zones and playground zones protect children. In a school zone the limit is 30 km/h from 8 am to 5 pm on school days. In a playground zone the limit is 30 km/h from dawn to dusk every day. Watch for children who may run into the street, and obey crossing guards. A flashing green light at a crosswalk means pedestrians control the signal, so be ready to stop.
