Irish driving test manoeuvres, practised until they are smooth
The Category B test in Ireland includes reversing around a corner, a turnabout and a hill start. Each has a page here: a short list of reference points and a simulator that repeats it with the same car and the same road every time.
- Reverse around a cornerDrive past the side road on your left, then reverse round the corner and about three car lengths along it.
- TurnaboutTurn the car round to face the other way, using forward and reverse gears and without touching the kerb.
- Hill startPull away from the kerb on an uphill slope without rolling back or stalling: look all round, signal, find the bite, release the handbrake and drive on.
The simulator uses one fixed car, a 4.04 m hatchback with a 2.49 m wheelbase, and shows speeds in km/h. The hill start uses a simplified gas and biting-point bar instead of a real clutch, so it teaches the order of the routine, not the feel of the pedals.
Based on the Road Safety Authority's published guidance on the Category B driving test and on driving school guides. We are not affiliated with the RSA, and the simulator is practice, not a copy of the test.
